Today I have an outdoor (or indoor) grilling recipe to share with you, a grilled balsamic marinated flank steak! Balsamic vinegar is a pretty tasty vinegar and it makes for a really nice dressing or marinade when combined with some simple ingredients like oil, Dijon mustard, honey, garlic, salt and pepper. The steak is pretty easy, you simply marinate it in the balsamic marinade overnight and then quickly grill it before slicing! Balsamic vinegar also goes well in caprese salad, which consists of tomatoes, basil, fresh mozzarella along with the vinegar and for this meal I do slight variation on it where I blister the tomatoes over the grill and serve the caprese salad on top of the grilled balsamic steak. Yum! This quick and easy balsamic grilled flak steak caprese is one of my favourite summer meals!
Balsamic Grilled Flank Steak Caprese is a fresh, flavor-packed dish that combines juicy grilled steak with classic Caprese ingredients like tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil—finished with a rich balsamic glaze. Here’s a simple, restaurant-quality version you can make at home:
🥩 Ingredients
For the steak:
- 1½–2 lbs flank steak
- ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 tbsp honey
- Salt & black pepper
For the Caprese topping:
- 1–2 cups cherry tomatoes (halved)
- 8 oz fresh mozzarella (sliced or pearls)
- Fresh basil leaves
- 1–2 tbsp olive oil
- Salt & pepper
Optional finish:
- Balsamic glaze (store-bought or reduced balsamic vinegar)
🔥 Instructions
1. Marinate the steak
Whisk balsamic vinegar, olive oil, garlic, honey, salt, and pepper. Coat the flank steak and marinate for at least 30 minutes (up to 4 hours for deeper flavor).
2. Grill the steak
Preheat grill (or grill pan) to medium-high heat.
Cook steak about 4–6 minutes per side for medium-rare (adjust to preference).
Let it rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing.
3. Prepare the Caprese topping
In a bowl, combine tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
4. Assemble
Slice the steak thinly against the grain.
Top with the Caprese mixture and drizzle with balsamic glaze.
🍽️ Tips for best results
- Slice against the grain to keep the steak tender.
- Use high-quality balsamic vinegar for richer flavor.
- Letting the steak rest keeps it juicy.
🥗 What to serve with it
- Garlic roasted potatoes
- Grilled vegetables
- Crusty bread or a light salad
